1990年代，劉靜敏在博物館工作時，因爲承辦了一個銅爐的展覽，第一次接觸到香。“我那時覺得太神奇了，怎麽會有爛木頭加上火之後，出來的煙是如此的漂亮，味道又如此的香。”後來，她師從台灣香學大師劉良佑先生，現在已經是這一領域的權威。

經過多年對香學的研究，劉靜敏學會了對氣味不要有太多判斷。其實每一種氣味都會過去，你就靜靜地讓它過去，然後再等下一個氣味的到來。”

劉靜敏認爲大家可以把中國的香當作是文化的一部分，或者是學問的一部分。“並不是說它沒有技巧沒有儀式，而是應該說中國的香文化裏面，講究的不是儀式。那些儀式在中國人的概念裏面，尤其是文人的概念裏面，認爲那是小技，是不值得去誇耀的。我們所謂的‘技、藝、道’，它是有層次的。”
