This lesson looks at the difference between persuasion and manipulation. Learners are encouraged to think in more detail about the techniques and effects of emotive language. The "real-world" application and consequences of emotive language are explored by interviewing an investigative journalist and analysing Thabo Mbeki's speech at the adoption of the constitution. To extend this lesson you could source copies of other famous political speeches from the internet. Particularly good examples include Nelson Mandela's inaugural speech, Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech and Winston Churchill's speech about "We will fight".
