Exc(+) condition. Very nice mandolin that was played, but well cared for. There are a few small nicks and pick marks on the top. The back is very nice condition, as well as the sides, back of neck, peghead, etc. Frets show minor playing marks, but no v-dents. Sunburst. Multiple ivoroid binding throughout, with black line showing on sides of body, side of fingerboard and peghead. Radiused Ebony fingerboard with pearl dot inlays. Original 2-pc Ebony bridge. Original nickel 2-pc tailpiece with Nugget engraved in cover. Original nickel Schaller tuners. Tortoise pickguard installed. The sound is great. Exc condition. Beautifully constructed traditional F-5 mandolin by Chris Stanley. "Full" V-neck. 1 1/16" width at nut. Red spruce top with lovely sunburst finish. Flamed maple one-piece back, sides, and neck. Fully multiple bound with ivoroid. Original tuners replaced with antiqued "Golden Age" tuners. Tortoise plate pickguard with multiple ivoroid binding. James tailpiece with The Gibson engraved. The Gibson and traditional pearl flowerpot engraved in peghead overlay. Pearl dot position markers inlayed in traditional ebony double-cut flat fingerboard. If you look closely, the finish on the peghead veneer has been modified to look older, or more "antique". A small amount of touches, bumps, and scrataches here and there. Very good condition. This fine instrument was made and presented to Bill Monroe in 1978 to help "mend fences" between Mr Monroe and the Gibson Company. He used this mandolin in many performances along with his famous Loar, predominately for special tunings such as "Get Up, John". When his 1923 Loar was vandalized and heavily damaged in the mid-'80's, Bill used it regularly until the Gibson Co. restored his F-5 Loar. At some point Mr Monroe presented this mandolin to a very close friend and law officer Bill Hawkins, who treasured the instrument. Mr Hawkins' family sold this mandolin to the late iconic Montana musician Walt Timmerman, who promised to always cherish it, and did until his passing. This mandolin is a part of bluegrass history, having been played by Bill Monroe for rehearsals, shows and recordings. This was authenticated on August 6, 2005 by Curtis McPeake of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, owner of Unique Instruments and personal friend of Mr. Hawkins (the authentication paper is included in the hard case). Nicely figured maple back, sides, and neck. Extremely tight grain spruce top with sunburst. Fern inlay in peghead, with The Gibson logo inlaid in pearl. Mandolin shows some lacquer checking and some incidental wear, with significant wear on the small pre-War style frets. Gold Schaller tuners with solid mother of pearl buttons. Engraved James tailpiece. Flat ebony fingerboard with traditional double-cut extension and pearl position dot markers inlaid. 1 3/32" width at mother of pearl nut. New. Traditional A model from Collings with sunburst finish and radiused fingerboard. Figured Maple back, sides and neck. Select Englemann Spruce top. Ebony radiused fingerboard, peghead overlay and traditional Loar style adjustable bridge. Nickel hardware, including great tuners with black buttons and 1-pc cast tailpiece. I don't know how they do it so well and so consistently... but Collings manages to make these brand new instruments look like perfection. To an experienced instrument buyer they look exactly like "future vintage", meaning the ones to look for in the future as excellent collectible vintage instruments. The new Rover RM-75 is a pretty respectable F-style mandolin. Made with solid Maple and solid Spruce, they actually deliver a sound with a good attack and good depth. Our local teachers recommend these as good starter mandolins.
